- Use form two or three when more information is needed to interpret the command — that is, there's more than one possible target by the same name to which the command could be applied. In the example, there's a tall guard, a short guard, a skinny guard, etc.
- Use form four when there are many instances of <target> present, and you want to attack one of them in particular.
Unlike weapon-specific violence commands, Murder figures out for you the optimal command for the weapon you're wielding, and calls it. Or calls Hit if you're wielding nothing.
When you Murder something, you initiate a fight which may or may not turn out to have lethal consequences, depending on whether you're also wielding a weapon; whether your opponent is wielding a weapon; and whether you possess the Incapacitate Skill to sufficient degree to control your violence.
In Midgaard, violence nearly always causes alignment drift toward evil. It's possible to become very evil very fast if you initiate lots of attacks. See the player manual for exceptions.
There are many conditions which could prevent you from being able to attack a particular target. You may be too tired, or paralyzed, or unable to perceive the target. The Game channel will inform you of the outcome of your command.
Unlike most other Murder commands, there is no specific Murder Skill that will determine how effective your attempts to use the Murder command will be. Since Murder forwards to a specific weapon command or to Hit, you'll need the Skill which is appropriate for that.
