I've reached level 5, and I believe have just learned something important. The quantity of practice points you gain with each level seems to depend on your effective intelligence rating at the moment you level. The higher your int, the more practice points you'll gain.

Since skills are so central to your TC experience, this makes your int value very important; and it creates an incentive for a kind of ritual while you level.

The ritual is: get your int value as high as possible before you bow to the statue. So, wear that intelligence sachet, wear those copper spectacles, and any other item you've found that increases your intelligence. You can take them off again after you level, but be sure to have them on when you type that 'bow' command.

You want to keep that int value up there while you're learning, too. The higher your int, the more likely your attempt to learn will be successful -- makes sense. So wear those +int items while typing the 'learn' command, too!
