Okay the last discussion of this issue seems to have fizzled out, but I felt like we were getting somewhere, so let me start a new thread this way...
Proposal: Allow player stealing, with the restriction that a thief PC of level X can only attempt to steal from others PCs of level X or higher.
Good idea? Bad idea?

That proves respect. I don't think your idea will go anywhere because of the integrity with which this game is played. I think it's a good idea maybe. I generally carry ivory stuff around and give it away. So being a high level or any level past 10 would tick me off if i was trying to give someone a laser carving knife and had it stolen beforehand. I'm not talking canteens... I'm talking leveling gear also. Cobalt stuff... I don't like the idea. Fun yes but harmful.

I still like it. A thief is a thief. Though I can see that people with a whole set of levelling gear might be alarmed, and it seems unfair that those items would be stolen after the hard work of accumulating it. Perhaps there could be only certain items you could steal, or would that be too complex? I still like the idea of breaking into houses though

hahaha, well I've got to admit I am against the idea of breaking into houses. I mean there has to be somewhere that is totally, unflinchingly safe to store your precious goodies.

Would it be practical? You can't steal worn things, only carried. So if I think people are going to steal from me I'll just stop carrying things I care about. Put it in a daypack.

Just because there are ways to circumvent it doesn't seem to diminish the fun. Part of the fun playing a thief is always about finding who has something to steal, the same thing would be true of peeking other player inventories.

Thieves can peak player inventories now, they just can't steal.
Anyway I oppose player stealing. Too many bad experiences elsewhere. I like that there's not so much player versus player in TC.

Either way you knew what I meant: yes some people will stop carrying inventories if there is PvP stealing, but not everyone will be able to do this all the time so it would still be possible to steal from some players sometimes.
But if you simply dislike the idea even when restricted, that's another matter. Can we get a few more opinions on this? So far I've only heard a couple of "Yeas" and a couple of "Neys".

Interested, but I'm convinced that the cons of allowing PvP theft far outweigh the pros.
When you see another player logon, rather than saying hi and seeing if they want to go adventuring, the first thing to do is log off your character and log on your specially prepared thief character to see if you can rob them. naturally, seeing this, they'll log off their main character and log on their thief-type as well. Neither will have anything to steal from the other, and neither will be able to relax and work on what they were doing.
Running areas like the forest, graveyard, tree of wealth, etc. will become pointless, since thieves may simply stake out the exits to catch anyone foolish enough to do anything besides be a thief themselves.
Players would try to avoid playing while anyone else was on; social interactions would dwindle to nothing once the abuse really got bad.
This is how I see it playing out. If PvP theft was present, it would need to be very different from normal theft. A level restriction is not likely to accomplish anything, since it's quite possible to deliberately keep your thief low level, if it suits you, while still accumumlating enough talent to rob people.
