I have always been unable to play TC from my Uni room because of the uni firewall, for my sins i also play Runescape and have also been unable to play this for the same reasons until now.

Tonight i found that by selecing the "unsigned applet using default java" option on the High/low resolution screen I am able to play runescape in my room, I wondered if this insight is in anyway helpful to creating a TC that can be played more universally?

However i am to be honest unsure of what the "unsigned applet" really means, i think it may be a lack of cache on the users pc but a more experienced Java user may be able to correct me.

OK I'll refine what i wrote before, I can play Runescape apparently on the default java setting as well so i can play one java game but not TC or Yahoo! pool either, must be a change in the firewall I guess that benefits one game but not others.

We've thought about changing the network "port" which TC uses to make it more firewall friendly. For instance, we could have it use the SSH port or the FTP port or something like that which most firewalls will allow.

The possible problem though is that it could potentially open the TC server to hacking attempts by automated software which "sniffs" standard ports like these.

I'm not sure that would hurt anything -- I doubt that the TC server is vulnerable to an automated hacking engine, because of the special communication protocol it uses. But, you never know.

Just thinking out loud. Maybe we'll implement the change and try it out for a while.
