OMG I remember this so well. When at last I could kill the Thain to get a good weapon and better armor. I lived for this world back then.

DIE SMUGASS WIZARD, I WILL OWN YOUR CLOAK!

My goal there was always to kill Frodo, take Sting, and kill Legolas and Gimli with it.

In our version the minotaur hide is actually better than the wizard's silvery cloak. It adds ridiculous hitroll, like, +15 I think. Back when I played DikuMUDs there was no Newbie Zone, so, that cloak was a great milestone.

It really is strange being in the Shire with just the two of us. I remember having to wait for repops all the time when there were a dozen players all raiding it at once.

I used to wait at the Mill for repops, to bag the mobs there before higher-level players could tear the place up. Sometimes dudes - always dudes - level 15 or higher would swoop in just as I was getting ready and wipe everything out. Vivid memory: some people have no sense of level etiquette.

And damn that bull! First time it attacked I had a heart attack. Nothing else in the zone is aggressive. Then later after killing it I'd go north to get the cows and horses but there'd be a repop, so when I returned south the bull was there again and would tear me up if not at full health. You learn to rest up fully before entering the meadow.

You can never get away from that problem of higher-level characters wiping out areas designed for lower characters. Some players find that a really fun and rewarding thing for themselves. I think it's like, "Ha ha, I'm Superdude, nothing can touch me here!" It's always been a huge source of frustration for me in any RP adventure world.

Can you propose concrete guidelines for etiquette in Midgaard? We can post them here as a sticky. What specifically would your rule be for when a mob is too small to kill?

If you can kill it without losing a single health point it's definitely too small for you.

Examples? In concrete Midgaard terms?

If you can kill the Rook, don't kill the Pawns.

If you can kill the Thain, don't kill the Youths.

If you can kill the Warrior and the Prince, don't kill the Shiriffs.

If you can kill the Battle Master and the Wizard, don't kill the Thain.

And so on.

What if there's no-one else logged in? Does it still matter?

Works for me. Why don't you write something up? We'll post it as a sticky.
