OK, very old idea here, but, it would be great to be able to leave persistent PMs for characters.

We can use the forum PMs for OOC messages to players but it would be cool to be able to leave messages in-game for characters.

Where would you go to pick up your messages?

If you have a player house or inn room, would they be delivered there?

Would everyone have a PO box? Or a PO box if you don't have a house or inn room?

Would there be more than one post office? One per Third?

Would messages be threaded, like emails, where replies include the entire history of previous replies? Or stand-alone like paper letters?

Cool.

The simplest implementation would be a post office with carriers who'll deliver your mail & packages to your player house, if you have one; or hold them for you to pick up, if not. Works for you?

We do have CityNet, though, so it's a bit cumbersome to have messages limited to old school paper with hand delivery. Suppose you can send packages for hand-delivery, but written messages are electronic and you write/read them from a CityNet terminal, or a tablet computer, or etc.

Yes please. With ability to send packages to each other, or leave packages for each other in a secure way that can't be tampered.

Where would the building be? Presumably South since the function is "neutral", but the building would be like a factory staffed entirely by bots doing all the sorting. Or other ideas?

Sooooo. I'm thinking we'd put it opposite the southwest corner of Gray Plaza, at the corner of Picasso and Rousseau, a very artistic post office. You'd do nothing special to pick up your mail or packages, just walk in, you'll be auto-scanned, and the bots will bring you your stuffs.

Writing and addressing messages will require a few new commands. "Write", sure, where the args are what surface you're writing on. "Recipient" for who gets it. We'd need mailers for larger items. Drop your letter or package in a kiosk and recipients pick them up at the P.O.

What if the recipient owns a player house? It would be convenient to deliver it there instead of the P.O.

Mail kiosks would be all over the City.

Other ideas?

I like the idea of delivery to player houses. You can have bots/slaves/workers making deliveries around the city. Or maybe that could be something players do for dinars? Deliver a package to a player house (or business?), get paid a few game bucks.

Can mail be stolen?

Hmmm, I think it would be a bad idea. You're sending a very-hard-to-get Lightning Knife to a friend via the postal service and it's stolen on the way? I'd be pissed.

I don't think though that items are directly interacted with? It sounds like there will be parcels, like standardized mailing containers in the USA into which you place your items before writing the delivery name/address on the parcel. If I got that right, thieves wouldn't know what's inside, and, they'd all be equally easy/difficult to steal.

It would be fun though to have mail heists, like the American Wild West.

Maybe there could be mail insurance? Buy the insurance, if your parcel is stolen or lost you get paid for it?
