TriadCity Message of the Day
2013-01-02

The SmartMonsters web site, including the Triadcity Players' Guide, MOTD, and other materials, is being marked up with new tags implementing the WAI-ARIA specification enabling screen readers and related assistive technologies for the visually impaired.

This is not just another contribution to the March of Protocols. The WAI-ARIA spec - Accessible Rich Internet Applications - is a big step forward toward standardizing and rationalizing the behavior of disparate assistive technologies, helping them to be more helpful. Because many TriadCity players are visually impaired, we place great emphasis on conforming to the new spec.

We've got several thousand pages to convert, so it's not a one-day job. Expect it to be ready real soon now.

In future we expect to fully ARIA-enable the TriadCity client apps, along with the interfaces for future games in the planning stage. Also, we're now testing our web pages as thoroughly as we can with Voice Over on the Mac, ChromeVox and NVDA on Windows, trying to ensure our navigation elements are well-labelled, tab in sensible order, and so on.

If you use a screen reader to access our site, please let us know how we're doing. If you're interested in helping us test, we'll be more than happy to spiff you with Reward Points, redeemable in-game for premium items and other good stuff. Please use the Fora to contact Mark Phillips.

Thanks!
