This flu season is getting out of control.
Many players and NPC's are suffering severly! The recouperation time is too long, and while being sick the characters and NPC's keep infecting more and more. The authenticity is almost too real.

My character has been sick for more than 6 hours IRL.

Can we please get rid of this plague?

The cold can be defeated by removing its sources. I've been asked not to explain more than that.

Colds can be stopped if everybody cooperates.

Sick players chilling on the island infect NPCs moving through, which spread it everywhere. My sick character was told to go to the mall to buy medicine. This is how it gets bad. If you're sick in public you're Typhoid Mary.

Lisa, Pam and I are pretty sure we've mapped the spread of colds. As Lisa said we've been asked not to share details. For now I can say, most colds aren't very contagious, but when there's one that spreads the responsible thing is to stay out of public.

I think there's a misconception that NPCs spread colds and players are victims. I imagine this is why players were filing bugs and feeling aggrieved. But reality is maybe more the other way. The big cold was made worse because sick players went around the city, and also hung around sick on the island where so many NPCs come through. This is so interesting because, certainly inadvertently, some players acted very much like anti-distancing protesters in RL, with similar results.

I checked the records, this was the first really "bad" cold since illnesses were introduced in 2014. I think players just didn't know how to manage it since there was no experience with one so nasty. Hopefully we can now spread the lore that if there's ever another really powerful outbreak, the right response is to isolate when sick. (While also managing the sources, which we're asked to not explain.)

Just also wanna say, I truly hope devs change ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the illness algorithm. This was the most fascinating experience I've ever had with RPGs, since the 1990s. This thing was emergent - unplanned - and it paralleled the coronavirus pandemic so exactly, including people's inappropriate responses. I really think it was brilliant. The CDC should use it as a model.

Most likely I’m one of those with inappropriate responses. I play to have fun and sometimes to escape the real world . I just had a scare if I had the corona virus but luckily it was “only” pneumonia. I really didn’t care to see the epidemic in the game

Are you feeling better? I hope so!

The strain which was so contagious is gone now. We asked for no reboots for a few days so we could eliminate it, and, we did. We made it a "quest", I guess. Looks like mutations since then are at the old levels, which no-one paid attention to before.

I agree with Lisa that this was a fascinating experience. I loved it! It's so different to everything else I've experienced in games like this. I feel really good about the accomplishment.

Kata, there's a really - really - positive reason why colds exist. Really. Sorry to be so coy but we promised not to give away spoilers.

We really want to give them away though.
