Yes, any administrator or higher-level Immortal can make the change for you. Just ask Qim, or Mark, or myself next time you see us online.

Addendum. I might have a theory. After reaching level 5, I initially had a lot of trouble learning. This was with my Learn Skill still at level 4. I learned Learn to level 5, after that, had no problem with Meditate or other skills.

So it might be that it's important to keep your Learn skill as high as possible. Specifically, matched to your current level.

Hope this helps.
Hi:

I had a lot of trouble learning Flee at levels 2 and 3. Once at level 4, no problem.

Hope this helps.
Hi folks (since Collective is plural):

I've been testing learning Flee and Meditate with a couple of newbie test characters, and am having no trouble. Sorry about that.

It's possible that your 25 attempts is simply the world's worst string of bad luck. But a couple of questions first:

What level are 'Collective'? The earlier character(s) was/were level 5, but what are you now?

How well have Collective mastered the Learn skill? (Level and degree of mastery.)

At 42, I'd say your int attribute is plenty high. It's important to get that Learn Skill mastered at your current level. That is, learn Learn to Master level at your current level. That'll give you the best odds of learning new Skills.

Thanks, let me know if the problem continues.

I haven't had a chance to check into it yet. Just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten you. Be another couple of days before I'll be able to get to it.

Hi:

The speed at which characters learn new skills depends largely on intelligence, mastery of the Learn skill, and the inherent difficulty to learn of each new skill. (It also depends on how smart and how skilled the teacher is.) Thus there's no set number of times a character will need to practice a particular skill before learning it.

Looks like your intelligence attribute is pretty good. Have you got the Learn skill at Master, level 5? If not, I'd suggest raising it. Other than that, you'll just have to keep trying.

hi thalmus!

looking forward to meeting you online!

you might want to start with all attributes set to 5. that's sort of generic, but, that might be fine for a first character. then as you learn more about the game world you can either take steps to change those attributes, or create a new character with the specific mix that interests you.

hope this helps!

While logged-in to the Website, click the "List My Characters" link from the left-side menu. There's a "delete" link next to each character on the list.

You can write to support@smartmonsters.com if you have any other questions.

Update:

The Help Bot now knows the complete FAQ, and most of the Players' Guide. It'll try to briefly answer a question it knows, and will open the appropriate web page for you to display the full info.

It also knows a bit of geography. For instance, the locations of all the subway stops, and a few other odds and ends.

Over the next little while we'll improve it by loading answers to questions it receives from real players. If it's asked a question it doesn't know -- and the question seems real, that is, not frivolous -- we'll add that question and its answer to the bot's knowledge base.

Currently has about 800 questions and answers, believe it or not. Hopefully it's becoming more helpful!

Cool! Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. Glad it's turning out to be helpful!

The Help bot can now open new windows, which will display pages from the Players' Guide, FAQ, or the various bulletin boards.

If you use the bot, you might want to leave that 'help' window open: the bot will re-use the same one, if it's already up.

You may note that from time to time a robot named "Help" logs in for a while. This is a new chatterbot under development, far more sophisticated than Eliza (although still pretty dumb!), who will become increasingly knowledgeable about the things TriadCity newbies need to know.

Like Eliza, "Help" doesn't monitor the Chat channel. You have to use Tell or Ask to communicate with it/him/her.

Please go ahead! When it's connected, jump right in and ask away! I'll appreciate it especially if you'll ask it real questions about things that will be helpful to you. This will help us to determine which information to "teach" it next.

As of this moment, Help "knows" about 1/2 of the FAQ. I'm only going to add new knowledge a little at a time, so it'll take a little while for Help to become reasonably helpful. Should be fun to watch, if you're into this computer stuff!

NOTE that the Help bot is by no means a substitute for reading the Players' Guide, the FAQ, and these bulletin boards. It'll only ever be able to give basic info, and point you to a more detailed URL.

Hi Agular:

By all means, please do ask questions here!

No, you can't get in yet. The greenhouse will become a hothouse for certain rare species, but it's not written yet.

Thanks for the responses everybody! Input much appreciated.

I think what I'll do is try to strike a balance between detail and growth of the City. The long-term goal will be to flesh out every noun, so that it can be looked at or otherwise engaged with. But in the short and medium terms, I'm going to stay focused on implementnig features such as the three Temples, the guilds, and other areas needed as preconditions for character Roles, new Skills, and stuff like that.

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks Kaerue.

Up till now we've taken kindof a different approach to display of emotion, which you might call the "fine-grained commands" philosophy. So instead of a fairly generic Emote command, there are detailed commands for various emotions.

What complicates the philosophy a bit is our indecision about whether or when to build a "natural language parser" into the client applet. If we do this, it'll allow everyone to type plain English, e.g., "show me what's inside the darn bag", and the concept of Commands sort of goes away. We've kindof been holding back implementing the complete command vocabulary until we decide this directional issue.

So for now I'm gonna vote for punting on Emote or other new commands, that is for delaying a decision. But, that's just my personal 2 dinars, and I'm really glad to listen to what everyone else thinks.

Thanks!
