Some of my friends have been killed simply for being caught peeking at someone else. Now this happens in the NW (credit branch to be exact) which i think is hardly fair as surely murder and peeking are hardly an eye for an eye.

So now many theives are reluctant to peek, or use theri other skills as it means certain death if caught.

I suggest a system of levels for both crime and punishment is needed ASAP.

Thanks for listening to my concerns.

Hear hear!! I've been wanting this for ages. Sadly too late for me..and this message comes from beyond the grave.

You are right though, Boban....people are discouraged from using their thief skills, or even from BECOMING a thief.

Any chance of the justice system being finished and implemented soon?

I don't use my thief skills simply because I am too afraid of getting caught.. (my skills are not too good, grin)

I sure hope something could be done to the justice system. Getting killed for peeking is hardly fair...

A justice system would be good. But the real question would be what kind of penalties? Perhpas a monetary fine would ok for crimes like peeking. But i would hate it if major crimes were resolved with dinars. I wouldn't want rich players to be above the law and get away with murder. Of course, each third is gonna have their own versions of "justice". Imprisonment is always a good punishment. Just lock someone in an elevator for a couple months, they'll learn their lesson soon enough.

I sure hope you never get to be Hizzonor, Vohno. Can't we at least expect a cell, with light, and food provided?

Seriously though, I agree.... Imprisonment would be fair.

The types of punishment are endless, they could include dinar fines, confiscation of eq, imprisonment, being kicked out of a role thus banning you from using certain skills, being evicted from houses/inns the list is endless. Each of these punishments could also apply for different time periods so say you were kicked out of a role, or had high level eq taken away or were barred from owning property or levelling for so many years etc. Negative experience may even be involved (who says imprisonment is a positive experience!)

The other side of the arrangement is how to deal with criminals: take bobic for example who got caught peeking in the NW credit branch and was stabbed to death. If he had instead been either incapacitated then a passing archer could have taken him into detention. Or he could have been put on crimenet as a wanted person and the next law enforcement officer would have detained him. There are plenty of stormtrooper or peacekeeper posts around that could have a cell built onto them.

After detention though, the trial would take place, but where? Would there be a courthouse in each third to dispense justice? Would the third you are tried in depend on where you committed the crime or where you were caught?

There is certainly a lot to consider and discuss and I'm sure there is a lot of work to do before any such system is put in place. The first step though appears to be to debate the system to implement and thats one we can all start work on immediately.

Given the politics and way of life of the three very different thirds, I would imagine they would have greatly differing methods of dealing with criminals, and very diverse punishments.

I think there's something garbled here? It's not possible to be killed for peeking -- far as I know, anyway. Did something else happen when led to the deaths of your friends?

I believe there are earlier threads here which include some detail from Poobah or Mark or TelGar, I don't remember now, of what the justice system will be. I haven't gone looking, just noting this from memory.

FWIW I've never had any trouble using thief skills. I wouldn't be so concerned about it. Just be prudent.

Sago was killed just for peeking the Confident Man. She didn't attack him. Just peeked his inv. And this has happened to others too. (ooc I now find there is a mention in the Player's Guide of peeking in the NE possibly leading to violence. Alas too late.) But I still think it's harsh.

i believe that it's a misunderstanding to think of the confident man's action as a punishment in response to a crime. rather that he was offended by a personal intrusion, and took the kind of action one would have expected from someone of his character.

i noted this in another place in this thread, but i thought i'd add it here near the top so that more will see it. being attacked for peeking doesn't necessarily have anything to do with punishment or crime. it's very possible that people are simply offended over intrusion into their privacy. sometimes people react violently to that kind of thing.

also there are sometimes institutional requirements to keep in mind. credit unions are responsible for keeping safe the savings of the third's citizenry. they might take that responsibility seriously, as would any other type of bank.

seems to me the moral might better be: think twice about peeking people who are responsible for money; who are providing security; or who are easily offended.

I agree with what you say, but the point I am making is the comparison between peeking, or stealing and murder. I am saying that in my opinion these two sorts of crime are hardly "an eye for an eye" and that maybe there is a balance issue here?

In the NE maybe you would expect this balance no not be so evident, but in the NW perhaps it is more of an issue, although i do absolutely take your point about having resposibilities for money.

i don't think i explained my point well. peeking isn't a crime. there's no comparison between peeking on the one hand and stealing or murder on the other. when people respond to peeking, they're not administering justice. people's responses are either individual or institutional, but they have nothing to do with being just or balanced. i hope this makes better sense!
